Veterinary Science
Veterinary Science involves the study of the animal anatomy. It involves the treatment of sick animals. This course is tailor made for those with a passion for medicine and love for animals. There are many specialisations available in this field of veterinary science. With the awareness growing among the citizens towards showing sensitivity to animals, the need for veterinary doctors is increasing. Not just treating animals, veterinary doctors are employed by many animal organisations to take care of the animals in their shelter. There are many universities which offer courses in veterinary sciences. These include bachelor’s degree in veterinary sciences which is an undergraduate level degree as well as a master’s degree. Some universities may offer a diploma course too though it is not too common.
Universities such as Central Queensland University, Charles Sturt University, Griffith University, University of New South Wales, Cengage Education Private Ltd, Sydney Institute of TAFE, Canberra Institute of Technology, Australian Catholic University, Charles Darwin University, University of New England, University of Sydney, James Cook University, University of Western Sydney, University of Sunshine Coast and University of Newcastle offer degree courses in veterinary sciences. Bachelors of Veterinary Science, Graduate Course in Animal Science, Graduate Diploma of Animal Sciences, Graduate Certificate in Animal Studies, Graduate Certificate in Animal Health Management and Graduate Certificate in Animal Breeding are some of the courses that are offered by many universities. Most of these Australian universities have a global reputation of being centres of excellence. This is mainly due to their massive infrastructure along with trained and experienced faculty.
The bachelor’s course is usually a five year course depending on the university and the mode of learning. Since this course has many practical modules, it is best studied full time. The bachelor’s degree provides the students with generic and practical skills to practice veterinary science and contribute towards bettering the welfare of animals. Some of the subjects that are studied during the term of the course are physiology, reproduction, anatomy, cell biology, nutrition and genetics. There are many practical courses that are coupled with these subjects to help the students gain practical experience and co relate the knowledge gained in the theory subjects. Admission into these courses are purely based on merit and will depend on the marks gained in grade 12th. Knowledge of maths, physics, chemistry and biology at school level is mandatory.
