James Cook University in Australia has been serving national and international students with degree programs, which are recognized worldwide. Apart from degree courses, there are research programs offered by it in different fields.
The University
Named after James Crook, the British sea captain, James Cook University (JCU) was established in the year 1970 as James Cook University of North Queensland. It was in year 1998 that the university acquired its present day name. The main campus of this university is located at Townsville, Queensland in Australia. Also, there are other campuses located at places like Cairns, Brisbane and Singapore. Moreover, there exist many education partners of the university in Asia-Pacific region.
The Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of the World's Top Universities ranked JCU amongst top 500 universities in 2006 as well as 2007. JCu also happens to be a proud member of Innovative Research Universities Australia. Moreover, JCU enjoys the status of being the second oldest university in Queensland.
There are as many as 20 research centres run by JCU in the region, where research work is conducted in various fields like marine biology, tropical environment studies, earth sciences or geology, engineering, tropical health, tourism, satellite technology and many more. Out of 15,000 total students, around 2,000 hail from international locations.
The students enrolling with JCU experience exclusive learning concepts, which include practical sessions and field trips. Also, the arrangements are made by university for internships and vacation placements to prepare the future graduates for different professional challenges. The qualified and competent teaching staff is employed by the university to leave no stone unturned in the direction of effective learning.
Major areas of study
The university offers as many as 170 undergraduate and 140 postgraduate degree programs. These courses include study areas like accounting, business, chemistry, commerce, communication, economics, education, engineering, foreign languages, history, hospitality management, Indigenous Australian studies, information technology, law, marine biology and marine science, medicine, science, sociology, sport, tourism and zoology.
International Student services
The university offers computer laboratories and libraries to national as well as international students. But, in order to entertain the requirements of international students, International Student Centre offers additional services like airport pick-up, accommodation, orientation, advices, health facilities and welfare support.
Accommodation
The Accommodation Service of JCU helps the students to find suitable locations within the campus as well as around the campus. There are accommodations options offered in the form of on-campus houses, private rental houses and shared apartments.
Airport Pickup
The airport pick-up facilities and temporary accommodations are offered by university to students coming from different locations. These free of charge services are provided only at prior notification given by the student.
Orientation Meeting
The orientation event is accompanied by city excursions and sharing information about class schedules, timetables, academic staff and so on.
Opportunities to Study Abroad
The abundance of courses offered by the university helps students from different countries to choose JCU as destination for complimentary education. The opening up of international study centre at Singapore campus of the university has further influenced the though process of international students to become a part of this education experience.
